Spatially, the arms of the cross in each piece represent the axis of the world. The crossing of the vertical axis (symbolizing spirituality and hope) and the horizontal axis (symbolizing humanity and pain) creates a formidable tension that also refers to the four elements and their properties. The Paths refer to the Journeys of Life: the eternal searches for Truth, Happiness and Purpose. The paths also refer to communication throughout these Journeys: Paths that parallel each other in determined directions that rarely converge or connect. The spiritual reference to the cross juxtaposes the human loss of connection.
